My own sons (15,19, & 24) are interested in nature and enjoy getting
outdoors and looking at nature but their patience or attention span is
limited. They are interested when it's something neat, like watching a
Harrier on patrol and diving for prey but they lose interest when it comes
to scanning a flock of 100's of Widgeon for a Eurasian.

Let me take another tack. In some of the other hobbies/sports I indulge
in the absence of younger participants brings up concern that the
hobby/sport may die out because of a lack of new blood. Is there concern
that birding may be dying because of the lack of new blood? My observation
is that people generally don't enter some activites until they are older
for any number of social and economic reasons and the "young blood" may be
forty years old instead of fourteen.
