Part of the key to encourage young people to swim against the coolness
tide is to provide a safe environment for activities. This last summer
I disguised bird watching as a summer class that kids could get high
school credit for. We banded shorebirds and counted ducks for two weeks.

And now I have students bugging me about when the next class is going to be.

If we really believe that recruiting young birders is important, then we
need to make access easier for them. Volunteer to take a few with you.
They are a lot of fun and they keep you on your toes.
