The Two Rivers CBC (confluence of Walla Walla with the Columbia) was held
Jan 2. Thirteen people participated in five parties. Some of the
highlights
of the count were: 51,500 + Mallards, 1600 + Canvasbacks, no accipiters,
only 90
Red-tailed hawks and very low pheasent numbers. Eight new species were
added to the cumulative count. These were: 32 Rosy finches, 1 Mew gull,
2 Glaucous gulls, 1 Common Loon, 1 Eared Grebe, 8 Wild Turkey, 1
Lincoln's
Sparrow and the biggest surprise, a single Pine Grosebeak. A total of 79
species and 65,000+ individuals were found. Most of the ducks and geese
were forced onto the Columbia river due to heavy hunting pressure and
thick
ice on all backwaters, ponds and lakes. 1989 was the first year of this
count.
This CBC is conducted for several reasons. First to census the bird
numbers as accurately as can be done. Secondly to learn more about winter
birds and just what is preferred winter habitat. Thirdly, to enjoy the
comraderie of other birders and have fun.
