In the mid-seventies a high school teacher by the name of Jim Fielder
taught biology at a Bellevue high school. His hair was down half way down
his back as his own personal protest against the Viet Nam war. And he
never did cut it when it was over. His ornithology classes always had
waiting lists. He 'enlightened' hundreds of students of both sexes. The
weekend field trips were a big draw. We saw amazing things. He even sent
close to 10 groups of 6 to live at American Camp on San Juan Island for a
week at a time to study eagles under Steve Lehmans instruction.

Anyway, he introduced hundreds of flailing high school students to
something we could find "cool" and in doing so opened a new world. Many
have stuck with it.
