It's probably both. My father did some duck hunting in his early days
and was an avid fisherman. Maybe the "hunting instinct" runs in the
family, except it gets expressed in different ways. Though as a
bander, catching birds is a big attraction, oh and there is also some
scientific type stuff to with it as well :-))

Maybe becoming a birder relies on subtle/indirect influences. I was
lucky enough that the "exposure" to the countryside at an early age
helped develop an interest in birding. The small town environment
also helped. It would be interesting to see whether a more urban
setting produce the same type of interests.
