I thought this noted from Dick Viet about an odd meadowlark at the Samish
flats might motivate someone to try to pin it down.

Also, I saw a flock of six meadowlarks at Samish on Wednesday 4 Jan.
One gave the distinctive "bzhht" Eastern rather than the "chuck"
Western call note and had yellow confined to the throat and not
encroaching above that. Adult plumage. I don't know whether
Westerns ever give the "Bzhhht" call (this is not the fkight rattle
given by both) and will ask Sievert Rohwer. The flock is at the
north end of Smith Road, which runs north from the Bow-Edison Road,
just east of Edison. Smith Road ends by a house, where a gravel road
extends north past a gate with "no parking" and "wildlife area"
signs. I'm not sure if I'll have time to get back, but maybe
somebody else can check it. I'm sure of the features on the bird,
just not sure of the variation in Western Meadowlarks. Cheers, Dick
