This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, January 6, 1995.
.
The female GARGANEY first reported by Bob Woodley on December 15
in Richland, Washington, was still being seen through January 3,
according to Andy Stepniewski. The bird was at the mouth of the
Richland Yacht Club which is just downstream from the Shiloh
Rivershore Motel. You may call Bob Woodley at 509-943-4826 for
more information. See Washington DeLorme p. 39, b-6.
.
A male COMMON GRACKLE is residing at the Walla Walla College Dairy
Farm. First reported to the hotline by Mike Denny, the bird has
been present since January 3 and was still seen as of today. Many
have seen it and it has been photographed. It associates with
European Starlings and Red-winged Blackbirds. To get to the
dairy, head west from Walla Walla on US 12 about 5 miles to Last
Chance Road. Turn south onto Last Chance and continue until it
meets Whitman Avenue. Turn left onto Whitman and follow it to the
dairy. Please park by the white silo bags, not up by the
buildings. Feel free to walk about. The bird was also seen about
0.25 mile west of the farm in a field of corn stubble.
.
Mike Denny reports one first year and one adult GLAUCOUS GULL on
the poop piles just north of the Wallula pulp mill along US 12 in
Walla Walla County, on January 4. See Washington DeLorme, p. 40,
d-1. Mike also reports 2, maybe 3 WESTERN GULLS below Ice Harbor
Dam in northwestern Walla Walla County. Andy Stpeniewski reported
the Western Gulls were there January 4, along with several
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS and a third-winter THAYER'S GULL. Ice Harbor
Dam is on Washington DeLorme p. 40, c-1, and can be reached via
Washington 124.
.
The ICELAND GULL first reported December 18 is still being seen in
the Lewiston / Clarkston area. Winnie Hepburn and Carole Vande
Voorde saw it at the big levee pond in Lewiston today, January 6,
and later on the ice in the Clearwater River near the large grain
terminal in the Port of Lewiston. See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.
.
Andy Stepniewski saw a RED-THROATED LOON at Priest Rapids Dam on
December 31. To get there, take Washington 240 northwest from
Richland. About 1.5 miles south of the Vernita Bridge over the
Columbia, turn west onto the Midway Substation Road. This road is
very rough with sharp rocks so drive slowly and cautiously. The
bird was with Common Loons, Red-necked, Horned, Western and Eared
Grebes, and lots of diving ducks. There were also Bald Eagle
there. See Washington DeLorme p. 52, c-1.
.
The male EURASIAN WIGEON in the Lewiston / Clarkston area, first
reported December 28, is still being seen. Dave Holick and I saw
it at Swallows Park in Clarkston, Mike Denny saw it at the big
levee pond in Lewiston on December 31 and later that day at
Swallows, and Louise LaVoie saw it January 2 at the Fred Warren
.
Memorial Fishing Pond and the nearby baseball field at the north
end of the US 12 bridge over the Clearwater River. To get to the
levee pond, take US 12 west into Lewiston. After crossing the
Clearwater River, stay right past Locomotive Park. At the first
traffic light past the park, turn right onto the US 12 bypass. Go
about a mile to the parking area on the right just before the
railroad bridge. Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1. Swallows Park is
south of Clarkston along Washington 129 along the Snake River.
See Washington DeLorme p. 43, a-8.
.
Mike Denny also had a female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at Swallows Park on
December 31. Also that day, an albino CANADA GOOSE was seen
just west of Costco on the Snake River in Clarkston.
.
Andy Stepniewski reports the male EURASIAN WIGEON in Leslie Groves
Park in north Richland, Washington was still there on January 3.
The park is on the Columbia River.
.
Finally, two good sparrows are at McNary NWR along the wooded
trail by the headquarters. Warren Hall and Jim Acton spied a
SWAMP SPARROW this past week and Bob Woodley added a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. See Washington DeLorme p. 40, c-1.
