Bluebirds in winter?
Kevin Aanerud wants to know: Sunday, Jan. 8th, while on the way home from
Boise where he and Paul Cozens and Ben Feltner had successfully seen
Black-Crowned Rosy Finches, Kevin saw a Western Bluebird in College Place,
Walla Walla County. He found this sighting unusual and wonders if others know
of any similar winter records. Please reply to me and I can walk the messages
down the street or call Kevin directly at 206-523-6195. Yes, the intrepid trio
(then joined by this caffeine-starved writer) were seeking (successfully) the
Common Grackle and attendant Rusty Blackbird(s) in College Place.

Incidentally, the grackle stood out most successfully when flying on the
periphery of the main blackbird group. Its bulk, substantial head and
comparatively huge bill were neon in the dull crowd. The rusty, at least to my
tired eye, appeared to have a jaunty, heads-up walking style that helped
differentiate it from the herd.
