Bushtits, golden-crowned and ruby crowned kinglets all have sock like nests.

I did a quick look through The Birder's Handbook and found no other birds
besides the orioles, kinglets and bushtits that build this type of nest.
What I find confusion about the original posting is the close proximity
of the nests to both each other and that they were "hanging several feet
above the water." Any ideas?

According to The Birder's Handbook, red-winged blackbirds don't make a
sock like nest, they make a typical cup shaped nest.
