To add to Michael Price's note, the male FALCATED TEAL was still present on
both Jan 21 and 22 in Tofino Inlet on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
The best route from Seattle, etc, would be via the Horseshoe Bay-Nanaimo
ferry out of West Vancouver (the Port Angeles-Victoria ferry is an option for
those west of Seattle); north from Nanaimo to Highway 4 south of Parksville,
and then Highway 4 to Tofino. Turn right onto Sharp Road at the Dolphin
Motel just before entering Tofino. The bird is with Gadwalls in the mud
flats off the end of Sharp Road...best seen during periods of low tide. No
one has yet claimed "definitely an escapee", but equally, no one will ever
claim with certainty that it is "definitely wild". A male Falcated Teal,
presumably the same bird, was in the same place April 19-23, 1994. I'll
update the Victoria Rare Bird Alert (604) 592-3381) as reports are received.
