Scott Ray reports a light gray phase GYRFALCON just east of Yakima
along Washington 24 near mile post 18 on January 16. See
Washington DeLorme p. 51, d-8.

Dan Svingen reports some good birds below McNary dam in the
wildlife area on the Oregon side. On January 15 two HERMIT
THRUSH, an adult GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, an adult MEW GULL, a
WESTERN GULL, 3 LONG-EARED OWLS and a single BARN OWL were all
observed there. See Washington DeLorme p. 29, a-6. The area is
easily accessed via US 730 -- just follow the signs to the dam.

I have an unsubstantiated report of a SNOWY OWL near the Wal-Mart
just west of Moscow on January 16.

Mark Crotteau reports PINE GROSBEAKS and a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL on
Moscow Mountain on January 15. Mark saw the birds after taking
West Twin Road about as far as you can go. Mark parked just
before the fork and walked the left fork. The grosbeaks were near
the level area and the owl was heard a little farther on. See
Idaho DeLorme p. 58, b-1.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, first seen on the Moscow-Pullman
Christmas Bird Count, was seen again on January 17 at the feeder
at Rominger residence in Pullman. If you'd like to try and see
this bird, call Eric Rominger at 509-334-3910.

A sure sign of spring? Well maybe. I saw a SAY'S PHOEBE in
Lewiston on January 8 and Dan and Ila Svingen spotted another bird
on the 14th in northeastern Oregon.
