Hello birders, this is the Bird Brain, voice of Seattle
Audubon's Equal Opportunity Bird Sightings Hotline for
SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 1995, at 10 AM.

An adult male FALCATED TEAL was seen on Tofino Inlet on the
west coast of Vancouver Island. Look for it at low tide off
Sharpe Rd. in Tofino. This may be the same individual that
was here April 19-22, 1994. For details call the Victoria,

An adult ROSS'S GOOSE has been seen with CANADA GEESE in the
Kent Valley south of Seattle since Jan. 13th. Most reports
are for late afternoon at the Kent Ponds or in fields along
Frager Rd. north of 212th St. It has also been reported
south of 212th along Frager and Russell Rds. to Russell Rd.
Park, but beware of look-alike domestic geese. Four
EURASIAN WIGEONS and one EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL were in
a flooded field along West Valley Highway south of the Kent-
Des Moines Rd. Jan. 16.

A SWAMP SPARROW has been heard and/or seen at the Kent Ponds
and nearby at the abandoned P-Patch 1/4 miles south of 212th
St. along Russell Rd. A HARRIS'S SPARROW in high plumage
was reported Jan. 13 with GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS just west
of the intersection of Russell Rd. and 228th St. Two WHITE-
THROATED SPARROWS were with OREGON JUNCOS and WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS at the Christian Farm along Frager Rd. just south
of 209th St.

The adult male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER remains a regular
visitor at Marilyn & Bill Hatheway's Mercer Is. feeder
through early January. Call ahead at 232-6199 to arrange a
visit.

A BRANDT'S CORMORANT has been seen regularly off Salty's
Restaurant east of Duwamish Head in West Seattle through
Jan. 2. A PELAGIC CORMORANT is often seen with DOUBLE-
CRESTEDS off Alki Beach. An EARED GREBE has been regular
off Lakeview Marina north of Seward Park. The imm. NORTHERN
SHRIKE was still being seen at the Montlake Fill through
Jan. 19.

An apparent female TUFTED DUCK was reported at the Everett
STP Jan. 17.

An EMPEROR GOOSE was seen Jan. 1 & 2 on the south tip of
Graveyard Spit opposite the Oyster House. Look for it at
high tide with a scope. A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was found Jan.
7 off Becket Pt. on the Quimper Peninsula, Jefferson Co.
Twenty ANCIENT MURRELETS were off Pt. Wilson near Pt.
Townsend Jan. 8.

A GYRFALCONs was seen January 16 on the Samish Flats
northwest of Mt. Vernon. Look for it near the "West 90,"
which is the 90 degree bend in Samish I. Rd. just west of
the T-junction with the Bayview-Edison Rd. or between Field
and Sunset Rds. and on poles along Farm-to-Market Rd. Two
AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were at the Skagit WRA parking lot at
the boat launch Jan. 8; three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were
located nearby. Five WHITE-BELLIED BRANTS were found among
over 1500 BRANTS studied off Samish Island Jan. 8.

A GREAT EGRET has been associating with GREAT BLUE HERONs at
the Clark Creek fish hatchery in Puyallup since December.
Take I-5 to River Rd., take River Rd. to Pioneer, follow
Pioneer pas 14th Ave SW to 12th Ave SW. The hatchery is at
the end of 12th Ave.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen at Bay Center, Pacific Co.,
Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 at the Pioneer Cemetery and along nearby
Rhoades St. Another MOCKINGBIRD has been seen just west of
Montesano, Grays Harbor Co. Cross the Wynoochee River
bridge, then turn left on Aldergrove St. and continue to the
end at Devonshire. It has been seen through Jan. 14 in the
apple tree on the se corner of this intersection.

A first winter KUMLEIN'S ICELAND GULL was discovered
December 18 on the Snake River at Lewiston, Idaho, and
Clarkston, Washington. It has been seen sporadically since.
Look for it at the north end of Greenbelt Park in Clarkston,
just north of the Hwy 12 bridge near the Costco. In
Lewiston look for it at Levee Park.

An adult LITTLE GULL was reported at the south end of
American Lake south of Tacoma through January 1. The adult
SLATY-BACKED GULL may be back for a second winter. It was
reported Dec. 24-27 and Jan. 5 along the Puyallup River at
Tacoma. Look for it at a rendering plant near the Gog-le-
hi-te wetland or downstream toward the mouth of the Puyallup
River. Also present there is a 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL.
Another 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Coulon Park in
Renton and at the mouth of the Cedar R. at the north end of
the Renton Airport runway January 2.
