This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, January 27, 1995.

Dan Svingen and Dave Holick both report seeing the EURASIAN WIGEON
in Lewiston last weekend. It was in the big levee pond in
Lewiston, but it has also been seen at Swallows Park in Clarkston
and at the Fred Warren Memorial Fishing Pond and the nearby
baseball field at the northeast end of the US 12 bridge over the
Clearwater River. To get to the levee pond, take US 12 west into
Lewiston. After crossing the Clearwater River, stay right past
Locomotive Park. At the first traffic light past the park, turn
right onto the US 12 bypass. Go about a mile to the parking area
on the right just before the railroad bridge. See Idaho DeLorme
p. 54, a-1. Swallows Park is south of Clarkston along Washington
129 along the Snake River.

Pat Heglund saw the first winter ICELAND GULL this past week near
Swallows Park in south Clarkston, along Washington 129 along the
Snake River. See Washington DeLorme p. 43, halfway between a and
b, 8.

Dan Svingen and I spent a lovely day at the Fighting Creek
Landfill south of Coeur d'Alene on January 21. Besides Herring,
California and Ring-billed, there were also 2 first winter
GLAUCOUS GULLS, and 2 first winter THAYER'S GULLS. There was
another first winter GLAUCOUS GULL near the US 95 bridge over the
Spokane River in Coeur d'Alene that same day. The landfill is
about 14 miles south of Coeur d'Alene along US 95. Turn west into
the landfill at mile post 415.4. Call ahead at 208-769-4402 and
let them know you're coming, or stop in at the manager's office in
the main building. They have temporarily suspended Saturday dumping,
so the gulls may or may not be there in quantity. Last Saturday
there were few at 10 but a nice crowd at noon. To see gulls on
the Spokane River, good viewing can be had at the Harbor Center
along Northwest Blvd. Turn east onto Northwest Blvd. from US 95
and take the first right south into the Harbor Center. Cross the
railroad tracks and take the first right to the lower parking
lot. If you'd like to see maps and a description of these two
