Hello birders, this is the Bird Brain, voice of Seattle
Audubon's Bird Sightings Hotline for
SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1995, at 6 AM.

An adult male FALCATED TEAL has been seen daily through
January 26th on Tofino Inlet on the west coast of Vancouver
Island. Look for it at low tide off Sharpe Rd. in Tofino.
This may be the same individual that was here April 19-22,
1994. For details call the Victoria, BC, bird hotline at

An adult ROSS'S GOOSE has been seen with CANADA GEESE in the
Kent Valley south of Seattle Jan. 13-27. Most recent
sightings have been from the field nw of the corner of 212th
St and West Valley Rd/aka 68th St. just ne of the Kent
Ponds. Four EURASIAN WIGEONS and one EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED
TEAL were in a flooded field along West Valley Highway south
of the Kent-Des Moines Rd. Jan. 16.

A female TUFTED DUCK is on the Everett STP through at least
Jan. 26. Look for it in the southwest corner of the main
pond. The EMPEROR GOOSE is still being seen at high tide on
the south extremity of Graveyard Spit opposite the Oyster
House on Dungeness Bay.

A HARRIS'S SPARROW in high plumage was reported Jan. 13-26
just west of the intersection of Russell Rd. and 228th St.
Another HARRIS'S SPARROW was seen 1/4 mi n of 212th St.
along the Green River. Two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were
with OREGON JUNCOS and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS at the
Christian Farm along Frager Rd. just south of 216th St.

A SWAMP SPARROW was found on the UW campus Jan. 25 just n of
the earth mound sculpture east of the tennis center. A RED-
BREASTED SAPSUCKER was reported on the UW campus in the
Medicinal Herb Garden Jan. 26. An EARED GREBE was at
Magnuson Park Jan. 23rd. The adult male BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER remains a regular visitor at Marilyn & Bill
Hatheway's Mercer Is. feeder. Call ahead at 232-6199 to
arrange a visit.

A 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Coulon Park in Renton
and at the mouth of the Cedar R. at the north end of the
Renton Airport runway January 2. Another was at Pt. No
Point on the Kitsap Peninsula Jan. 27th.

A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was found Jan. 7 off Becket Pt. on the
Quimper Peninsula, Jefferson Co. Twenty ANCIENT MURRELETS
were off Pt. Wilson near Pt. Townsend Jan. 8.

A GYRFALCONs was seen January 16 on the Samish Flats
northwest of Mt. Vernon. Look for it near the "West 90,"
which is the 90 degree bend in Samish I. Rd. just west of
the T-junction with the Bayview-Edison Rd. or between Field
and Sunset Rds. and on poles along Farm-to-Market Rd.

One AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, a
SWAMP SPARROW, and a SLATE-COLORED JUNCO were located at the
Skagit WMA parking lot at the boat launch Jan. 25.

A GREAT EGRET has been associating with GREAT BLUE HERONs at
the Clark Creek fish hatchery in Puyallup since December.
Take I-5 to River Rd., take River Rd. to Pioneer, follow
Pioneer past 14th Ave SW to 12th Ave SW. The hatchery is at
the end of 12th Ave.

Two spots for WHITE-TAILED KITES near Chehalis are west of
I-5 off SR 6. The first is along SR 6 between Goff Rd and
Adna High School 3.5 miles west of I-5 near a red barn on a
curve. The other is south from SR 6 via Curtis Hill Rd. 4.5
mi to Boistfort Valley Rd, then left 1 mile to King Rd.,
then left on King 0.3 mi.

The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK has been reported again Jan. 27 at
Ridgefield NWR north of Vancouver, WA in Clark Co. It was
spotted on the way into the refuge just north of the
warehouse.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD has been seen regularly just west of
Montesano in Grays Harbor Co. Cross the Wynoochee River
bridge, then turn left on Aldergrove St. and continue to the
end at Devonshire. It has been seen through Jan. 27 in the
apple tree on the se corner of this intersection. A ROCK
SANDPIPER was with a flock of 30 SURFBIRDS at Westhaven
State Park at Westport Jan. 20.

A first winter KUMLEIN'S ICELAND GULL was discovered
December 18 on the Snake River at Lewiston, Idaho, and
Clarkston, Washington. It has been seen sporadically since.
Look for it at the north end of Greenbelt Park in Clarkston,
just north of the Hwy 12 bridge near the Costco. In
Lewiston look for it at Levee Park.
