This may apply to any group of birds, but raptors especially--I have yet to
see
a guide that can teach you raptors sufficiently enough to make you feel
comfortable in the field. Nothing beats birding with a good specialist.
There
are just too many variations of some and little secrets on others to fit in
any
book.

If you want to learn raptors, find a good raptor person to hang out with.
Besides
good specialists are always willing to share their knowledge.
