While searching for the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper at Crockett Lake,
several of us observed a strange peep. From what I understand,
Leasties can have a great deal of variability, so the bird might
simply be a Least. Here's a brief description.

The bird was definitely smaller and shorter-legged than several
Westerns which were in the same area. Leg color appeared dark (but
plenty of mud was present). It had a chunky appearance (which may not
really be a good field mark) and was short-tailed. The bill was
short, straight, and petite. The head, breast, and entire back of
the bird were a rich chocolate brown, with a hint of rufous on the
head. The dark color on the breast sharply ended, and the remainder
of the belly (all the way to the tail) was a buffy-salmon wash
(definitely NOT white). No white coloration was apparent on the head
or back.

Any ideas? Others who may try to find the Sharp-tailed might want to
search through the peep flocks for this small dark bird.
