I've been to Belize twice so I'll put in my 2 cents worth.

Howell's book seems to be getting good reviews, but may be
bulky for use in the field (maybe someone else could confirm
or refute that?) and is spendy.

If you go with Peterson & Chalif (especially if cost & size are
factors), be sure to take along a U.S. Guide that covers at least
Eastern U.S. birds unless you already know all Eastern U.S. birds
by sight. They are covered briefly in the text, but no plates.

Birds of Tikal (Smithe?) is likely hard to find and there is also
an updated book of similar title by Randall Beavers, but I wouldn't
bother with either unless you want more bulk to carry around.
Actually, the Beavers book is small and should be available from
ABA Sales. I have it at home and could give you more info next week
if desired.

Good Birding!
