There was a major kill of Greylag Geese and Mute Swans at Loch Eye, near
Elgin, Scotland about 5 years ago when water levels fell so low that the
feeding birds were able to pick up the lead shot which had accumulated on the
bottom of the loch. As far as I remember there were hundreds of birds
involved, with around 2-300 Greylag Geese being killed.

There was some talk of dredging all the sediment from the loch to remove the
lead, but I don't know if this happened.

It's certainly a problem which takes a long time to go away - if ever.

Incidently there is a similar problem with mercury on the seabed around
Liverpool, England and the wetlands of the Wirral penninsula nearby.
Apparently in some places there are pools of the stuff visible on the bottom.
