Unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth. "What the heck
was that?" lead to "Must have been a Townsend's Shearwater." It was
only after the birds were clearly photographed that reality started to
permeate the situation.
Nobody was expecting Manx Shearwater off California/Washington when these
birds started to show up.
