A not-very related question about fledging success. When you see a
recently fledged bird, how far will it have moved from its nest? I am
curious about how people who do breeding bird surveys or produce breeding
bird atlases deal with this question. If a see a flying junco that still
has a little down on its head, how far may it have traveled? Last
summer, when orioles successfully nested in our yard, then left, I found
them in a few days feeding about 1/2 mile away, but it clearly looked as
if they could have traveled much further.
