On Sunday evening I observed several Purple Martins at Titlow Beach in Tacoma. They were using nest boxes placed on old pilings surrounded by water.
Have Purple Martins nested there with regularity in past years? Is it unusual for them to nest *over* water?
ey weren't necessarily nesting I guess, but one female stayed at the opening of a nest box for as long as I observed them.
I know little about this species.
Nearby a pair of Pigeon Guillemots sat on a timber atop the pilings. I heard them calling for the first time. Sort of eerie.
