Pardon the cross-posting, but...

Is it possible that the anti-environmental .ss.ole. in Congress are
hearing the clamor for their hides, and are trying to do some damage
control?

>RE: H.R. 1977 Interior Appropriations Bill & NBS Funding

>National Audubon Society requested and today the Senate Interior Appropriations
>Subcommittee granted the National Biological Service an appropriation of $146
>million. This is a $34 million increase from the House allocation. The NBS
>will be left very lean but effective at this level. The Subcommittee agreed to
>maintain the independence of the NBS, and rather than merge it into the U.S.
>Geological Survey as the House recommended, moved it under Interior's Assistant
>Secretary for Water & Science.

>Subcommittee Chairman Gorton offered an endorsement of the NBS in his opening
>statement, saying it provides important non-controversial scientific functions
>for the U.S. and should be retained, and ranking minority member Senator Byrd
>commended Chairman Gorton for his support of the NBS. The Senate Subcommittee
>adopted the final House bill language which allows the use of trained volunteers
>and grants NBS access to private lands with the landowner's written permission.
>Finally, the Subcommittee proposed yet another name change for the NBS -- the
>Natural Resources Science Agency. If Congress fully funds the programs we will
>accept their name changes! The full Senate Appropriations Committee will vote
>on the bill this Friday. Thank you for your calls and letters to your Senators.
>Please contace me for additional information.
