The friend I was thinking of is Stuart Janes. As I mentioned,
I forget whether this was for his MS or later PhD. And I
don't know who his prof was.

After all that stuart just settled down in southern Oregon to
teach high school...

Apparently, there's a fairly well defined hybridization zone, at
least the population he was studying, at a particular altitude.
