No surprise here. I can't imagine why Carl Pope believes that Clinton
went back on his word. I don't recall him giving his word about no
accelerated salvage logging????

Deep inside a sweeping budget bill on President Clinton's desk is a
provision that could virtually exempt national forests from
environmental controls and open the way for resumed logging of old-
growth stands in California and the Pacific Northwest.

Under the logging provision, the U.S. Forest Service is directed to
double the cutting of dead and dying trees in national forests over
the next 18 months. The agency would be virtually unhindered by the
Endangered Species Act and other laws protecting wildlife, and timber
sales would be exempt from court challenge.

``The president has betrayed his own promises, his past environmental
efforts and the entire principle of the rule of law on the nation's
public land,'' said Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club.

``Effectively, this leaves the national forests to be clear-cut and
destroyed at the whim of local congressmen and Forest Service
bureaucrats,'' Pope said. ``It denies the American people a say in how
their forests are managed.''
