This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

On July 19, Jay Degrossiler (sp?), Mike Nelson, David Gishner
(sp?) and Eric Lignus (sp?) observed a single RED PHALAROPE on Big Meadow
Lake in Pend O'reille County, Washington. This lake is about 6 miles west
of Ione the way the phalarope flies and from my DeLorme it looks like you
take Smackout Pass Road west from Ione to Meadow Road and follow it close
to the lake. See Washington DeLorme p. 118, c-4.

Merry Lynn Denny saw a LONG-TAILED JAEGER on the Walla Walla River Delta on
July 22. She and Mike observed the bird for about 3 minutes before it flew
north toward the Tri-Cities. The bird was an adult, white-morph. Also at
the delta were 11 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 9 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and 2
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. The delta is west of Walla Walla where the Walla
Walla River enters the Columbia, just north of the junction of US 12 and US
730. See Washington DeLorme, p. 40, d-1.

Dan Simpkins reports a good mix of shorebirds at Mann Lake east of Lewiston,
Idaho on July 21. Dan saw 16 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 1 each GREATER and
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and about a dozen each of
WESTERN andBAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.

Noteworthy birds today at Mann Lake, according to Dan Svingen, were
3 CANVASBACK, 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 50 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER.

To get to Mann Lake when approaching from US 95, take US 12 west into
Lewiston, cross the Memorial Bridge over the Clearwater River and take
the first left immediately after crossing the bridge toward East
Lewiston. Turn left onto Main Street and follow it to the blinking
lights. Turn right there onto Lindsay Creek Road and follow it about 5
miles to Grelle Avenue. At Grelle, turn left and after Grelle makes the
20 m.p.h. turn, turn left. You'll immediately see a sign for the lake.
Follow it to the dead end. See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.

On July 23 a bunch of amateurs, including myself, Dan Svingen, Earl Chapin
and John Gatchet, found a wonderful assortment of shorebirds at Copeland
Bridge in extreme northern Boundary County, Idaho. From the bridge we
observed 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, several BAIRD SANDPIPERS, WESTERN
SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, a couple GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a single LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, and 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. From the bridge we tallied about 25
species. The boat launch area is public but all other ground is private
so please stay on the roads. To get there, take US 95 north from Bonners
Ferry to Idaho 1. From the junction of Idaho 1 and US 95, proceed north
for about 1 mile on Idaho 1. At the milepost, turn left onto the paved
road and follow it about a mile to the Kootenai River. See Idaho DeLorme
p. 48, a-3.

This afternoon, July 28, Dale Goble observed an immature TENNESEE WARBLER in
his Moscow, Idaho backyard. To see if the bird is still around, call Dale
at 208-882-7697.

John and Amy Roberson observed a pair of LEAST FLYCATCHERS at the Clyde
Holliday State Park near John Day, Oregon, this past week. This perennial
location for Least Flycatchers is along US 26 and US 395 about 7 miles west
of John Day. The birds are in the brushy area between the picnic area and
campground along the John Day River. See Oregon DeLorme p. 81, c-8.

Dan Svingen reports 2 adult and one immature THREE-TOED WOODPECKER yesterday
south of Grangeville, Idaho near Snowhaven Ski Resort. If you're interested,
call Dan at 208-983-3447.

Finally, Mike Denny reports a huge BLUE GROUSE in Walla Walla County on
July 19. This species is quite uncommon in the county. The bird was
seen on Jasper Peak Road on top of Jasper Mountain, about 12 miles east
of US 12. Take the East Coppei Creek turnoff from US 12 between Dixie
and Waitsburg (about 3 miles south of Waitsburg) to the Jasper Mountain
Road (aka Jasper Peak Road) and follow it up the mountain. See
Washington DeLorme p. 41, c-8.

Good birding!
