Shorebirds Unlimited have 2 slots arranged to remove purple loosetrife from
Montlake Fill this week:

Thursday, August 3rd, 6pm - dusk.
Sunday, August 6th, 8 am - 12 noon.

So get your diaries out and make it a date !

Turn up anytime your effort is greatly appreciated. Bring some gloves and
something to drink. If you can bring a fork and a rake that would be great.
There is plenty of free food for those who get hungry, ie blackberries !!

Update:

Last Thursdays work group cleared another 30 feet of shoreline and tidied up
the remaining areas, in about 2 hours, an impressive rate. Thanks to all who
attended.

Sunday, Nate and myself cleared another 30-40 feet of shoreline and cut a
channel through to the first area of shoreline cleared. By the end of this
week all the shoreline should be connected. Over HALF of the central pond will
have been cleared.

So far around 90 person hours of effort will have been put in on the central
pond. I would expect that within another month the entire pond will be cleared
!!!!

Talking to some birders on Sunday, who have been visiting at the Fill for
over 10 years. Apparently flocks of 30-40 peeps and dozens of dowitchers were
once quite common, in the days before loosetrife infestation.


Birds at the Fill on Sunday:

2 lesser yellowlegs,
1 spotted sandpiper,
3 western sandpipers,
2 least sandpipers,
1 long-billed dowitcher.

The dowitcher and 1 lesser yellowlegs were very tame, feeding in the newly
cleared areas where we were working, sometimes only 8-12 feet away.
