Hi Tweeters,
In the midst of all this ornithological insignificance, I thought I'd report a personally significant experience.
Today, while observing wildlife with my students at school, I identified three flycatchers, all by ear. That's something that would have been unlikely for me a year ago.
First in a mixed woodland, I heard a Hammond's Flycatcher singing in the vicinity of a Black-throated Gray Warbler that set up residence a few weeks ago.
Second, in deciduous trees in a wetland came the call of a Pacific-slope Flycatcher. Finally, near a pond, a Willow Flycatcher.
I was totally thrilled. The Willow was a first for me today, and the others are also relatively recent.
Terminology: Since my dad called it bird watching, I think of myself as a bird watcher."Birding" sounds like "anting" to me. Hmmmm...maybe if I put birds on my head, they'll get those pests under control :-)
