In the Firs, in the Firs,
Where the Herons do occur!

This AM, while doing a survey in a stand of Douglas Fir, as I walked in, a
Great Blue Heron flew over. "Okay" I thought, "I don't see those every
day here". I then began my 8 minute survey. About 6 minutes into it. I
look up and see, not one, but two American Bitterns flying over. "Well,
that is something certainly dont see every day here". Actually the
second time this season. My watch bings, eight minutes are up and I am
off to my next plot which is only 300 meters away. I get there and in the
top of a Doug Fir, right in the middle of my plot, was a darkish, crow sized
blob of a bird. Crow is what I figured it would be, and why not, I am in
the middle of a good patch of Doug Fir why would I, why should I suspect
anything else. However, something just wasn't sitting right with me, or
should I say, sitting right with it. I put my binoculars upon the thing
to find that it had a rich chestnut colored throat, green back, a long
stout bill, and long slinder legs. Features most unbecoming of a crow.
This left the poor boy pondering and I soon began to suspect that my crow
was not a crow but in fact my third heron of the day, a Green Heron. Go
figure.
