This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Michael Smith reports a breeding-plumaged RED KNOT at Turnbull
National Wildlife Refuge on May 20. The bird was at Stubblefield
Lake and apparently was not relocated on subsequent days. The
refuge is south of Cheney, Washington along the Cheney-Plaza
Road. See Washington DeLorme p. 72, a-4.

David Man (sp?) and Jim Acton report a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW along
the Centennial Trail east of Spokane on May 24. The bird was 0.75
miles west of Harvard Road along the Centennial Trail,
specifically between AT&T cable markers 152 and 154. Harvard Road
heads north from Interstate 90 toward Otis Orchards. See
Washington DeLorme p. 89, c as in clay-colored, 7.5. If you have
any questions, call Jim Acton at 509-747-4880. The hotline would
appreciate an update on this bird.

Mike Denny reports GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS are in across southern
Washington. On May 27 Mike saw birds at several locations,
including 7 miles south of Lower Monumental Dam along Lower
Monumental Dam Road near Clyde in Walla Walla County. See
Washington DeLorme p. 41, a-5. Mike also reports birds along
Washington 260 between Kahlotus and Washtucna. Washington DeLorme
p. 54, c-4 through p. 55, c-6. Finally, Mike had birds at the
entrance to Palouse Falls State Park in eastern Franklin County.
You may reach Palouse Falls by heading south from Washtucna on
Washington 260, then east on Washington 261.

Dick Johnson observed a singing LEAST FLYCATCHER at Clyde Holliday
State Wayside between Mt. Vernon and John Day, Oregon, along US
26/US 395, on June 1. Oregon DeLorme p. 81, c-8. Dick also reports
20 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS in a burned area about 11 miles east
of Seneca, Oregon. Take Forest Service Road 16 11 miles east of
Seneca at US 395. Turn onto Forest Service Road 15 and go 1.5
miles to the burn. If you continue east on Forest Service Road 16
another 7 miles from its junction with road 15, Dick reports
SANDHILL CRANE, courting LONG-BILLED CURLEW and Pronghorn Antelope.
See Oregon DeLorme p. 82, d-1.

A male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER, HAIRY WOODPECKERS, WOODPECKERS and
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were active in the burned areas north of Upper
Payette Lake along Warren Wagon Road north and east of McCall,
Idaho over the weekend. See Idaho DeLorme p. 51, c-4. Warren
Wagon Road is a nice, paved road that leaves Idaho 55 on the north
end of McCall next to the Shore Lodge.

Five rusty SANDHILL CRANES were along Cascade Reservoir where Gold
Fork River enters. The birds were seen from Idaho 55, about 3
miles south of Donnelly, Idaho. Idaho DeLorme p. 43, b-4.

Unusual for Spring Valley Reservoir east of Troy, Idaho was a
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT on May 26 seen by Dave Holick.

A PRARIE FALCON was seen at Hole-in-the-Ground, Whitman County,
Washington on May 20 by Michael Smith. This is at the northeast
end of Rock Lake northwest of St. John.

Combinations of AMERICAN AVOCETS, WILSON'S & RED-NECKED PHALAROPE,
SPOTTED & LEAST SANDPIPERS, and dowitchers were reported from
several locations, including Turnbull NWR, Tolo Lake west of
Grangeville and 4 miles south of Fenn, Idaho, and the Craigmont,
Idaho, sewage ponds this past week.

At Malheur over the weekend were of few interesting sightings.
Dan Svingen reports a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and OVENBIRD at
Headquarters. Dick Johnson reports a ROSS' GOOSE 6 miles south of
Burns, numerous SAGE THRASHERS and a FERRUGINOUS HAWK north of The
Narrows near Wrights Point, 10 male BOBOLINKS at P-Ranch and
numerous LESSER GOLDFINCH and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT at Page Springs
Campground.
