Hello, this is Portland Audubon's Rare Bird Alert. This recording was
made Thursday, May 25th. If you have anything to add, call Harry
Nehls at 233-3976.
Very heavy migrations were noted during the past week, with several
unusual and rare birds noted in SE Oregon.
On MAY 20 an OLDSQUAW and 2 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were at the South
Jetty of the Columbia River. 2 BROWN PELICANS and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE
were there the next day. FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS are still being seen
along the coast and in the estuaries. Heavy BONAPARTE'S GULL and RED-
NECKED PHALAROPE movements were noted all week along the coast.
A huge flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS descended on Scappoose MAY 18 and have
remained. They continue widely scattered and in low numbers elsewhere.
A bright male HARLEQUIN DUCK was on the Willamette River around the
submarine at OMSI in Portland MAY 15. The HARLEQUIN [DUCK] at Eagle
Creek, near Bonneville dam, is still being seen.
A PACIFIC LOON and 45 WESTERN GREBES were at the John Day dam MAY 21.
Two CLARK'S GREBES and a WESTERN GREBE were on the Columbia River at
Three Mile Canyon, near Boardman, MAY 22.
Both YELLOWLEGS, a SORA, and a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER were at the Blount
Rd. wetlands near Canby MAY 22.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was at Little Crater meadows on the upper Clackamas
River MAY 20.
The male INDIGO BUNTING returned to Bloomberg Park, south of Eugene, MAY
19. It was there all last summer.
A pair of BLACK-NECKED STILTS, possibly nesting, were along the highway
north of Island City [La Grande] MAY 19. An EASTERN KINGBIRD and several
BOBOLINKS were near La Grande MAY 20.
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was near Fossil, and one was at Malheur refuge
headquarters MAY 19. Up to 3 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at Malheur
headquarters MAY 19. A [NORTHERN] MOCKINGBIRD was there MAY 20. A bright
male CAPE MAY WARBLER was briefly seen there MAY 21. A first spring male
HOODED ORIOLE was at Page Springs MAY 21. A TENNESSEE WARBLER and a pair
of [AMERICAN] REDSTARTS were at Fields MAY 22. That day a possible
VIRGINIA WARBLER was at Malheur headquarters. The headquarters GREAT-
TAILED GRACKLE continues to be seen.
A nesting pair of HORNED GREBES were at the pond beside Hwy 20, west of
Riley, over last weekend.
That's it for this week.
