Interesting to hear from some of you who live in nearly normal nighthawk
neighborhoods. Vis-a-vis clearcuts, I'm sure that open country facilitates
nighthawk nesting as well as perhaps supplying more insects. Nighthawks
need open ground on which to nest, so wooded regions aren't exactly
optimal, although at least some populations have adopted gravel roofs in
cities. I don't know how many nighthawks do this in this region. Any
personal information? In this area, nighthawks may have nested primarily
on the gravel banks of rivers before the forests were opened up.
