Subject: A Few Minutes with a Kinglet Family

The Douglas-firs outside my office were host to a family of Golden-crowned
Kinglets this morning--at least three, maybe four. At least one bird was
clearly a juvenile, recently fledged, with strong yellow streaking in the
wings, poor wingbars, and light lines over the eyes but none of the crown
stripes and color patch. Although it could fly, and was feeding itself a
little, it seemed very hesitant and tended to stay in safe places, as on
top of broad branches. The adults went through their typical acrobatics
while hunting insects, and every once in a while, in a flash, would stuff
something in the juvenile's mouth and go back to hunting. A small
pleasure of birdwatching, in contrast to listing.
