Last year someone in the Tacoma area reported that a little flock of Red
Crossbills was coming regularly to the Native Garden pond at Pt. Defiance
Park. On Sunday, I sat by that pond for a while. It's obviously an
attractive place for birds, and several came by; but no crossbills. Does
anyone know if they've been seen this year? And isn't it very unusual
for them to be down here in the lowlands?

Afterward I went to my favorite place in Ft. Lewis, at the big marsh
close to the east gate. Not only great for water birds but also for
warblers; I saw only Yellow, Wilson's, and Yellowthroat--not as
good as Russell Rogers's list for McChord AFB. It's easy to get a pass
for birding and similar activities at Ft. Lewis; does anyone know if one
can get into McChord for birding?
