The (hopefully unobtrusive) low fence and rope seems a reasonably good
solution, with the tiniest signs asking people please not to invade the
pond.

Alternatively, don't sweat it. I'm not convinced that these people will do
any harm! Ponds that dry up have bisons, elks, elephants, and other large
animals in them all over the world, and I don't think it's a problem to the
pond ecosystem. As long as it's muddy, people aren't going to walk into it
for the most part anyway.
