Subject: rescission bill veto

Tweeters, here's just one version of the sort of letter you could send to
the President. This is an important issue (I know, aren't they all?), and
we should hit 'em hard and hit 'em low, to continue the sports metaphor
that seems to dominate our media.

>President Clinton, I applaud your veto of the rescission bill, but it
>appears that the Gorton timber-salvage rider played little part in your
>decision to do so, and I have heard you won't use it as a factor in future
>iterations of this bill. I agree entirely with you that funds for
>education simply can't be cut, but at the same time we must preserve the
>natural environment that is another of the great resources of this country.
>
>As an environmentalist and scientist, I deplore the Republican attempt in
>this case to subvert both scientific information and environmental laws.
>Since when do partisan politics take priority over laws and regulations
>carefully crafted by knowledgeable people over the years? These laws and
>regulations have served us well, and, if anything, they need to be
>strengthened to continue to serve the generations to come. Public lands
>must be managed for all of us, not for an influential few. If this bill
>passes, with its timber-salvage rider, your administration will forever be
>associated with environmental rape. And I don't understand why Vice
>President Gore has so little influence in a situation in which his views
>would be so important.
>
>I have been one of your strong supporters since before the 1992 elections.
>Please don't let me down here.
