Then, again, it may simply be that they're so busy chasing rarities
that they are never in the state long enough to become known to
Washington birders!

I like your idea of charting income vs. species seen. Probably
comes out as a straight line on log paper. Certainly I'd
expect the cost-per-new-species to grow exponentially, except
for those first 200 or so nearby birds that come "for free".
