Babies no more! Some observers thought the young male/tiercel might go
today, but he did not. Tomorrow.. Tuesday? Falcon Research Group
observers and lots of downtown watchers will try to watch where the birds
land in their clumsy flights. Last year, the young tiercel flew 7 times
the first day he was out. The young female/falcon landed on a nearby
rooftop in her first flight, was flushed by a sunbather headed for that
same rooftop, and was then "lost" to observers for nearly 24 hours.

The concern--besides windows, about which we can do nothing-- is that
they will drop down chimneys or into crevices between buildings and not
be able to get out. Or they could drop down to street level, get tucked
into a doorway or something, and then get flushed out into traffic.

Keep in mind the Hotline number: 517-7363. When the birds fledge, the
Hotline-Keeper will be checking the hotline several times a day. FRG
folks are fairly well trained in how to capture a bird that's been
injured or downed in some way. Call the hotline, and keep the bird cornered
so it can't fly into the street. Notify the zoo at 684-4013, too, since
any downed bird will probably be taken to the raptor center there.

Again--if you or any of your friends have good vantage points of downtown
building rooftops or ledges, watch out for these birds. They're gonna do
what they're gonna do, but if they injure themselves or get stranded,
there are a few things which we might do to help. Here we go again!
