I appreciated Dennis Paulson's comments on the timing of early fall
shorebird migrants. I was surprised by one example of this. Last summer
( late August) I took my family on a hike around the small trails and
ponds at Chinook
pass. I was not surprised to see a spotted sandpiper here. What did
surprise me was seeing a greater yellowlegs;I still tend not to think of
shorebirds with small mountain lakes. I guess this is just another
example of jumping to conclusions about animals knowing just a
small part of their yearly cycle. The two birds were
quite cooperative, giving me some close up looks with side-by side size
comparisons.

Another question for the shorebird gurus- what other northwestern shorebirds
have predominantly inland fall migration routes?
