Hi tweeters,
There has been a pair of kestrels breeding successfully here on
Guemes Island for the past couple of years. Five fledged in '92 and
three in '94. They have had to evict starlings from the nest cavity and
this year the starlings seem to have won. Saw the tiercel early in the
season this year but not much since then. Sorry to lose this pair but
hopefully they have found a less contestable site. On another old thread,
saw a common nighthawk fly over last week for the first time this year.
Had an interesting hummer experience last week. I've been
observing a Rufous hummer's nest for a few weeks. Two bills poked
skyward from their lichened cup. One day I went out to look and the nest
was gone. I searched the ground beneath the spot where it had been and
found the nest and one baby hummer among the salal. With a piece of
light wire I reattached the nest to the cedar bough and placed the young
hummer back in the nest. Mom returned and accepted and now her charge is
beginning to buzz its wings. Am expecting fledging in a day or three!
Have fun,
Paul
