The Thunder Mt Fire burned in an area north of Tiffany Mt and to the west
of Forest Service Rd #39. Most of the three-toed activity is in the high
intensity burn portion located in and to the south of Dog Cr.This is a
roadless area so be prepared to hike. The black-back activity was more
concentrated around the Dill Cr drainage just to the south of the
confluence with 30mile Cr. The USGS quad map for this area is Corral
Butte. The birding in the area is, in general, outstanding and it is also
home to the regions most viable lynx population. If you do go
birding there, please consider writing a brief note to the Forest
Service (District Ranger, Tonasket District, 1 West Winesap, Tonasket, WA
98855) to let them know that there are other potential uses for this area other
than salvage logging. They are currently planning a large salvage
operation with up to 12 miles of new roads. For more information on
locations/directions/projects please feel free to contact me.
