I've only seen them on the Gulf Is. as winter visitors. P. i. fuliginosa
breeds all over the "sea stack" islands along the B.C. coast. Perhaps there
is another race from the mountains of Van. I. given the plasticity of the
species.

Incidentally, the Fox Sparrows on St. James I. on the s. end of the
Charlottes alternated two song types when I was there - one always followed
the other without fail - and I will never forget the clear, strong beauty
of the whistled passages. The race of the lowlands here in Prince George (a
riparian zone species) do not alternate song types. Apparently some Alaskan
races alternate three song types. Very interesting birds.
