While not injured or actually struck in the incident I'm about to
related, I was surprised:

Madeira Canyon in SE AZ is, of course, a great place to camp for
a few days. Along with the "specialties", there's a large population
of Acorn Woodpecker.

Walking up the road one evening, well after dark, I was startled
by a bird diving on my head. Not hitting me, but close enough
to feel the breeze from their wings.

Took me awhile to get a look (their were streetlamps) and I was
very surprised to see that it was an Acorn Woodpecker after
my noggin.
