I would have piped in sooner, but needed to find my notes from last
year's AOU/Cooper/Wilson meeting. Over dinner one evening I listened to
Vic Fazio from Ohio University describe work on Black-capped Vireos. He
stated that Vireonidae DNA is highly polymorhphic, making the group a
good choice for PCR testing. What amazed me was his claim that about 5
feathers, kept dry, can provide enough material to determine
paternity/maternity, given a tested population (which I assume the
Black-capped Vireo largely has).

I will *not* pretend to understand this topic; this post is for those of
you that do.
