I kayaked the Mercer Slough this morning from 7:30 to 9:00am. Great time
of day to be on water. I saw or heard 26 species. Highlights were two
Green Herons, two Belted Kingfishers, female Wood Duck with one juvenile, a
Pied-billed Grebe with two juveniles, a number of GBH's including about
eight (adults & adult-sized young) at the rookery, Swainson's Thrushes,
Black-headed Grosbeaks. Boat ramp access is just off the Bellevue Way SE
exit from I-90. The total time to go north on slough and take loop thru the
Bellefield Office Park is 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Stop at Winter's House, just
north of So. Bellevue P&R & blueberry farm, for map of area and info about
canoe rental if you don't have your own. A very pleasant way to go birding
for a change of pace.
