This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

A pair of singing LEAST FLYCATCHERS continue to be seen near Rose
Lake, Idaho. To get to the birds, take Idaho 3 toward Rose
Lake, either via Interstate 90 and exit 34 or from St. Maries. At
mile post 113.8 is Rose Creek Road. This is the best place to
park. The birds are in the aspen-cottonwood stand between Rose
Creek Road and Shady Lane Road which is at mile post 113.5.
The birds have been seen just west of Shady Lane Road, about 150'
north of Idaho 3. There are no breeding records for the state --
so please exercise care in viewing the birds.

You should also watch for AMERICAN REDSTART, WARBLING and RED-EYED
VIREO, NASHVILLE and YELLOW WARBLERS. One mile south of Shady
Lane Road were displaying WILD TURKEY on June 14, according to
John and Marty Hirth. At the Lane marsh on the west side of Idaho
3 just north of Lane and right across from the tavern, there were
dozens of SORA on June 16 and 22. See Idaho DeLorme p. 60, b-2.5.

The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW first reported May 24 by Jim Acton was
still resident along the Centennial Trail east of Spokane on June
17. The bird was 0.75 miles west of Harvard Road along the
Centennial Trail, specifically between AT&T cable markers 152 and
154. Harvard Road heads north from Interstate 90 toward Otis
Orchards. See Washington DeLorme p. 89, c-7.5. If you have any
questions, call Jim Acton at 509-747-4880.

Wayne Weber reports a single male BOBOLINK was singing
northeast of St. Maries, Idaho June 20. From St. Maries, head
north on Riverdale Road that departs from Idaho 3 between the St.
Maries River and Super Foods toward Mill City and Riverdale. Take
the first left onto the dike road. Eventually it swoops down to
the right. Follow it about another 0.5-0.75 mile to the grassy
fields. Watch for displaying males on either side of the road.
This route encircles a lake on which Wayne observed a swan on June
20. The bird was tentatively identified as a TRUMPETER SWAN.
Wayne would appreciate some more folks looking at this bird. Let
the hotline know the verdict. Idaho DeLorme p. 60, c-2.

Allister Stewart and Holly Nelson report a VIRGINIA RAIL
from the display pond at Burbank Slough at McNary NWR headquarters
on June 18. The bird was seen feeding on mud about 50 yards from
headquarters. Headquarters can be reached off US 12 east of the
Tri-cities. See Washington DeLorme p. 40, c-1.

Dan Svingen reports an immature plumaged COMMON LOON at Winchester
Lake State Park east southeast of Lewiston, Idaho, today, June
23. The park is easily reached off US 95 at Winchester. See
Idaho DeLorme p. 54, halfway between a and b, 2.

If you head up toward St. Maries or Rose Lake, NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH are seemingly everywhere there's water and trees.
Look for them across from the St. Maries sewage lagoons along
Idaho 3 just north of St. Maries, along the lake trail in Heyburn
State Park at the southwest end of Lake Chatcolet, and just
southwest of the Idaho 3 bridge just north of Harrison, Idaho.

Dan Svingen reports a CASPIAN TERN, 2 female WILSON'S PHALAROPES,
1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER at Mann Lake east of
the Lewiston Orchards, Idaho. To get there, take US 12 west into
Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River via the Memorial Bridge and
stay in the left lane. Take the first left after crossing the
Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River via the Memorial Bridge and
stay in the left lane. Take the first left after crossing the
bridge onto Main Street toward East Lewiston. At the blinking
light, turn right onto Lindsay Creek Road. Follow it until it
terminates at Grelle Avenue. Turn left onto Grelle and after
Grelle makes a 20 m.p.h. right turn, turn left. Immediately
you'll see a sign for Mann Lake. Continue straight, through the
dead end, to the lake. See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1. Best
viewing is usually from the east side of the lake.

Two unusual sightings for the week included a singing RED-EYED
VIREO near Central Ferry, Washington and an OSPREY 2 miles
northwest of Pullman, Washington.

John Roberson reports BEWICK'S WREN, LAZULI BUNTING and
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT in Wawawai Canyon southwest of Pullman on
June 17. From Pullman, take the Pullman-Wawawai Road (aka
Boonhill Road) to Wawawai Canyon Road and follow Wawawai Canyon
Road about 0.5 mile into the canyon. See Washington DeLorme p.
57, halfway between c as in chickadee and d as in dowitcher, 7.5.
LAZULI BUNTING and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT were also reported by Mike
Denny from June 18. The birds were just south of Endicott,
Washington in the first large riparian area. Washington DeLorme
p. 56, a-3. Also just outside Endicott were a pair of GRAY
PARTRIDGE.

Mike Denny also reports numerous VEERY, a few AMERICAN REDSTARTS,
and numerous flycatchers and warblers in the western foothills of
the Blue Mountains.

Good birding!
