As chickadees are rather territorial birds, I'll vote for the parsimonious
explanation that this particular pair hadn't heard about the "never in the
same nest" rule. And, having written that, I went to the "bible" (Susan
Smith's book on the Black-capped Chickadee) and found that Black-capped
Chickadees only occasionally have second broods, but when they do, they're
usually in the same nest.
