This is Dale Goble with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, June 30th. Kas is off for a
birding swing through southern Idaho -- and right on schedule the number
of bird reports has dropped.

Birds of note reported this week include:

LEAST FLYCATCHER
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
BOBOLINK
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW
WHITE PELICANS
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS

A singing LEAST FLYCATCHER continues to be seen near Rose Lake,
Idaho. Unlike last week when two birds were reported, Dan Simpkins
reports there was only a single bird last Sunday, June 25th. To get to
the bird, take Idaho 3 toward Rose Lake, either via Interstate 90 and exit
34 or from St. Maries. At mile post 113.8 is Rose Creek Road. This is
the best place to park. The birds are in the aspen-cottonwood stand
between Rose Creek Road and Shady Lane Road which is at mile post
113.5. The birds have been seen just west of Shady Lane Road, about
150' north of Idaho 3. There are no breeding records for the state -- so
please exercise care in viewing the bird.

AMERICAN REDSTART, WARBLING and RED-EYED VIREO, NASHVILLE
and YELLOW WARBLERS are also present in the stand. And NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH are seemingly everywhere there's water and trees. Look
for them across from the St. Maries sewage lagoons along Idaho 3 just
north of St. Maries, along the lake trail in Heyburn State Park at the
southwest end of Lake Chatcolet, and just southwest of the Idaho 3
bridge just north of Harrison, Idaho.

The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW first reported May 24 by Jim Acton was
still resident along the Centennial Trail east of Spokane. The bird was
0.75 miles west of Harvard Road along the Centennial Trail, specifically
between AT&T cable markers 152 and 154. Harvard Road heads north
from Interstate 90 toward Otis Orchards. See Washington DeLorme p.
89, c-7.5. If you have any questions, call Jim Acton at 509-747-4880.

On the 26th, Kas and Dan Svingen found two singing GRASSHOPPER
SPARROWS on the Old Whitebird Grade. The road is now part of the
Whitebird Battlefield Auto Tour. The sparrows were west of the road at
stop 5 on the battlefield tour. This is on the crease at the bottom of
pages 54-55 of the Idaho DeLorme.

Kas also reported some interesting birds from Long Valley and Round
Valley, south of McCall, Idaho. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was found on
60 Lane -- that the number 60. The Lane is east of Highway 55 at MP
101.9. Idaho DeLorme, p. 43 c-4.5.

A male BOBOLINK was displaying in the pasture at the notheast corner of
the intersection of East Roseberry Road and Farm-to-Market Road. At
Donnelly, turn east onto East Roseberry; Farm-to-Market Road is about 1
mile from Donnelly at the site of the former metropolis of Roseberry.
DeLorme, p. 43, b-4.2.

Finally, Kas reports 20 WHITE PELICANS just below the Cascade Dam at
the north end of Cascade.

Jay DeGroessler (sp?) and Mike Nelsen found a flock of WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS at Bunchgrass Meadows in Pend Oreille County in far
northeastern Washington. From Sullivan Lake Road, turn east onto
Harvey Creek Road and follow it to Bunchgrass Lake. The birds were in
the forest around the lake. Washington DeLorme, p. 119, c-7.

Good Birding!
