Hello, this is Portland Audubon's Rare Bird Alert. This recording was
made Thursday, February 23rd. If you have anything to add, call Harry
Nehls at 233-3976.

A sapsucker wintering in Barb Bellin's yard in Salem was recently
identified as a female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. It had a bright white
throat surrounded by a solid black border. If interested, call Barb
Bellin at 393-0243 between 6 and 9 PM.

On FEB 18 a bright male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK began coming to a feeder
in St. Hellens. There are few winter records of this species - and none
for males.

The Finley refuge GYRFALCON was last seen FEB 11. A BARRED OWL was
recently found along the Mill Hill trail in the refuge.

The BOHEMIAN WAXWING wintering with a small group of CEDAR [WAXWINGS]
in Monmouth was seen again FEB 22.

A very heavy movement of SANDHILL CRANES were reported between FEB 15
and 22 in the Willamette Valley and in the Portland area. Large numbers
are now gathering on Sauvie Island. A flock of 300 [GREATER] WHITE-
FRONTED GEESE were in Scappoose Bottoms FEB 19.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS were reported from Manzanita and from Astoria FEB 15.
Early TURKEY VULTURES were reported from Astoria and near Portland FEB 20.

Over 50 TREE SWALLOWS were at the Forest Grove ponds FEB 18; and the
first VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW was near Lebanon FEB 22.

A HARRIS' SPARROW is coming to a feeder in Corvallis, along with GOLDEN-
CROWNED, WHITE-CROWNED, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.

A mixed flock of BOHEMIAN and CEDAR WAXWINGS were at the mouth of the
John Day river FEB 20. At least 5 SAY'S PHOEBES were in Sherman Co.
that day, for the first spring reports.

An immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was found along the Central Patrol Road
in Malheur Refuge FEB 19. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was at headquarters that day.
Otherwise the refuge was very quiet.

Two BLUE-PHASED SNOW GEESE were at the Lower Klamath refuge [FEB 20].

That's it for this week.
