This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /

Cody Montgomery reports a male and female rufous-morph EURASIAN
WIGEON near the St. Maries Gun Club north of St. Maries, Idaho on
February 19. Other observers included Cody's dad, John Montgomery
and Dan Svingen. The female is Idaho's first. Way to go Cody!
The gun club is near mile post 96.5 along Idaho 3. Take Hells
Gulch Flat Road for more views near the club. See Idaho DeLorme
p. 60, c-2.
.
Dan Svingen and John Montgomery report seeing an adult
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, 2 immature GLAUCOUS GULLS, 2 adult GLAUCOUS
GULLS, and 2 first-winter THAYER'S GULLS at the Fighting Creek
Landfill, 14 miles south of Coeur d'Alene on February 19. The
entrance is on the west side of US 95 between mile post 415 and
416. Stop at the office in the blue building to let them know you
are there.
.
Nancy Miller still has 2 BLUE JAYS regularly visiting her feeder
along Four Mile Road east of Viola, Idaho. See Idaho DeLorme p.
58, b-1.
.
John and Marty Hirth report SAGE GROUSE south of Council, Idaho,
and east of the Midvale, Cambridge area. They saw nearly 30 birds
along Indian Valley and Farm To Market Roads. Near Crane Creek
Reservoir were 6 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS and a FERRUGINOUS HAWK.
See Idaho DeLorme p. 42, the bottom half. Closer to home, the
Hirth's have been hearing a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL near their home
east of Viola, Idaho.
.
A few noteworthy spring arrivals and odds and ends -- KILLDEER
arrived as usual during the third week of February to Moscow.
Dave Holick saw a RUFOUS-SIDED TOWHEE on Moscow Mountain on
February 25. John and Amy Roberson report VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS 7
miles up river from Asotin, Washington on February 26. That day
they also saw MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS and WESTERN BLUEBIRDS along
Montgomery Ridge Road south of Asotin. Dave Holick, Nancy Miller
and the Hirth's report CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES around Moscow
Mountain at relatively low elevations. John and Marty Hirth
report singing SAVANNAH SPARROWS just south of Council, Idaho. I
heard a singing WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW today, March 3. The Hirth's
also report 5 singing AMERICAN DIPPERS by the power plant near the
Rapid River Fish Hatchery near Riggins, Idaho.
.
In case you were wondering, lots of folks (about 40 for the month)
told me they listen to the hotline, including folks from these
Washington burgs: College Place, Spokane, Pullman, Yakima,
Clarkston, Wapato, and Kennewick. Idaho towns included Moscow,
Lewiston, St. Maries, Grangeville, and Culdesac. I also had folks
who said they call regularly from Portland, Vancouver BC,
Vicksburg MS and a once a month caller from Arizona. Dale Goble
relayed that another dozen or so folks make use of the hotline via
Internet. Thanks to everyone who participated and especially to
everyone who left kind messages for me -- I appreciate it.
.
Good birding!
