In defense of Norm Dicks, I'd have to mention the fact that he is a
rather vocal lobbyist for environmental causes. He has recently done
alot of work with watershed restoration and is interested in managing
resources at regional levels. He also brings in money for research on
natural resource issues in Washington (a little bacon for us!). The
importance of decaying trees for forest organisms can't be denied, but
considering the current bunch in D.C., Dicks is really one of the 'good'
guys. I believe he does really care about both people and forests (and
of course getting reelected), he probably doesn't understand some of the
more subtle intricacies of forest ecosystems. Write him and let him know!
